High Impact Athletes and Sudden Cardiac Death. Knowledge and importance of screening

Introduction: Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) continues causing strong impact among athlete community and the medical community. These deaths have been reported with more frequency during the last years, not only in the US, but in Latin American countries and European Countries as well. This condition has given place to more discussion and investigation regarding the cardiovascular screening and prevention among athletes that has to be done. In Guatemala there is no established screening yet. Objectives. The main objective of this study is to determine if there is enough knowledge among athletes and trainers about sudden cardiac death during extenuating exercise, and to what extent they are aware about their own risk. Methods: Descriptive and Transversal type study. N=217 from the Guatemalan National Sports Confederation (CGAG). Results: More than 50% of athletes has no awareness regarding their risk factors for sudden cardiac death, and more tan 50% of athletes know about the topic. Conclusions: Some athletes in the study have important risk factors for cardiovascular disease and have no knowledge of it. An important percentage of athletes have never had a cardiovascular evaluation oriented to their practice. It is necessary no establish more awareness about Sudden Cardiac death among the Guatemalan athlete community.
