Introduction: The most common head and neck cancer is cancer of the oral cavity, up to 90% of which is squamous cell carcinoma. The most frequently affected anatomical sites are the tongue, lips, and floor of the mouth. Objective: To determine differences in the therapeutic approach with the TNM criteria of the eighth edition of the AJCC vs. the seventh edition for squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity in patients of a private advanced otolaryngology center. Methods: Retrospective descriptive study, conducted by means of a qualitative comparison of the data of 40 patients identified from 02/27/2009 to 11/18/2021 from an advanced otorhinolaryngology center. Results: 70% of the cases of oral cancer correspond to squamous cell carcinoma, these 28 cases were assigned into two groups. In the first group, 28.57% presented surgical margins with malignancy, 75% presented recurrence; in the second group, 35.71% presented surgical margins with malignancy and 0% presented recurrence. Stage I was the most frequent in both groups with 64.29% and 50%, respectively. The main treatment was surgery only with 71.43% and 57.14%, respectively. Conclusion: This study showed that there is no difference in therapeutic approach although, there was a difference in the age of presentation between both sexes, staging and recurrence of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity in a private advanced otolaryngology center.
