Resumen
Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) is a global challenge for public health, to ensure effective clinical care, it´s crucial that future physicians are prepared to address the disease through an evidence-based and clinically effective approach. Objective: Assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to TB among medical students, especially focusing on those nearing clinical rotations in hospitals. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted between April and May 2023 with first to fourth year medical students at Universidad Francisco Marroquín (UFM). Data collection was done using a previously validated questionnaire. Statistical analysis of the data was conducted using STATA software. Results: This observational study reveals deficiencies in the understanding of tuberculosis among medical students, particularly in the early years. Although most students recognize airborne transmission, detailed knowledge and preventive practices are inadequate, demonstrating lack of structures and specific education about the disease. A dependence on less reliable sources such as the media was observed in lower-level courses. Accurate statistical interpretation and consistent use of measurement units are necessary to clarify the results and enhance the relevance of the study in medical education. Conclusion: We identified an increase tuberculosis knowledge with academic progression, albeit with significant deficiencies. Notably, insufficient knowledge was observed regarding preventive practices and symptoms recognition among students.
