Resumen
Overweight and obesity are a worldwide problem, and it is common to see its onset during childhood. This is secondary to both environmental and genetic factors. (1, 2) It is also associated to higher morbidity and mortality of different diseases, like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. (3) These can be systematically assessed by measuring the body mass index, and then classify and asses the risks that it can bring to the patient. Objective: To determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity among students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University Francisco Marroquin. Detail the weight and size of the students. Establish a database of the anthropometric measures. Evaluate the risk factors for cardiovascular disease associated to overweight and obesity. Methods: Cross Observational. 134 students from first to third year of the Faculty of Medicine were weighed and measured, then the body mass index was calculated and the students were classified in underweight, normal weight, overweight and obesity. Results: Of 134 students it was found that 11% of students were underweight, 55% normal weight, 28% overweight and 6% students were obese. Conclusion: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in the Faculty of Medicine is similar to studies from students from other countries, both men and women. The relationship between the consumption of cigarettes, alcohol and a raise in blood pressure with overweight and obesity was not significant and it was concluded that it could be du to the size of the sample, and with its growth the relationship may change.
