On November 19, 1975, at our invitation, Dr. Kenneth L. Melmon, then Chief of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), presented the Inaugural Lecture of the XXVI National Congress of Medicine: “Drug Interactions.” It was a resounding success, generating many questions and concerns. The topic was of general interest, since it covered all specialties. It was one of the first triggers of alert for national physicians. It was the beginning of an intense effort to guide the proper use of medications and to avoid, or at least reduce, and recognize adverse reactions due to drug interactions.
