Resumen
Introduction: Body Mass Index (BMI) has long been used by healthcare workers as a standard for classifying nutritional status, body fat content, and risk of metabolic disease, but its limitations are increasingly recognized. Objective: The objective of this study was to identify whether BMI is a reliable indicator of body fat status in Guatemalan adults or not. Methods: To determine this, data from 781 adults attending the Francisco Marroquín University (UFM) Nutrition clinic between 2022 and 2023 were analyzed. Results: It was found that BMI underestimated body fat status in at least 10% of subjects with respect to classification according to adiposity indexes measured by DXA. Moreover, waist circumference was found to correlate significantly with visceral adipose tissue for women and men (r=0.8608; p<0.0001 and r=0.8242; p<0.0001, respectively). Conclusion: For this reason, it was concluded that, although BMI is a valuable tool, its use should be complemented and contextualized with other measurements for a more accurate assessment of an individual's health status.
