Resumen
In recent decades, Guatemala has undergone an epidemiological transition characterized by overlapping patterns of morbidity and mortality. This means that, although the incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs)—such as cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases (diabetes and obesity), cancer, and respiratory diseases—has increased rapidly, infectious diseases and malnutrition—especially in childhood—maintain alarmingly high prevalences. Despite this, NCDs already occupy the top spots as causes of disability-adjusted life years and mortality in the country.
