Resumen
Introduction: Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy affecting the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). While large optic nerve cupping may suggest glaucomatous damage, it is not always pathological. Objective: To evaluate the average global and quadrant-specific thickness of the RNFL to identify significant differences among age groups. Methodology: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted; the medical records of 153 patients were reviewed. RNFL thickness (global and by quadrants) was assessed using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Results: A progressive decrease in global and quadrant RNFL thickness was demonstrated with increasing age. The median global thickness in the 20-year age group was 120.5 µm (IQR = 16.0), whereas in the 80-year group it was 114.0 µm (IQR = 9.0). Significant differences were identified between age groups (p < 0.05). The thinning pattern was most evident in the superior (p = 0.001) and inferior (p = 0.002) quadrants. Conclusions: RNFL thickness decreases with age in patients with large optic disc cupping but no glaucoma, particularly in the superior and inferior quadrants.
