Resumen
Background: The nutritional status of a pregnant woman has repercussions on the outcome of her pregnancy, mortality rate increases as the birth weight decreases, so weight is a very important factor for the growth and development of the newborn. It is known that weight gain during pregnancy has a similar increase in birth weight and a progressive decrease in the number of low birth weight infants (1) . Objective: The purpose of the study was to correlate third trimester maternal BMI and newborn weight in women who gave birth at Bárbara´ Health Post Center during 01/01/2014 to 12/30/2016. Information was obtained from their medical records and a database was then analyzed using XL.STAT. Results: The BMI of the pregnant patient and
the weight of the newborn were taken as study variables creating a database using the XL.STAT program. The mean BMI was 28.1 of the total sample, 42.4% had adequate BMI, 31.6% overweight and 25.9% obese. Eighty-nine (89 %) percent of infants had an adequate weight for gestational age. Conclusion: A statistically significant relationship was found between the variables BMI type and newborn weight (P = <0.0001). The
results show that there is a positive linear relationship of 9% between both variables.
