Background: Prenatal depression is a worldwide major public health problem, and during this period is associated with negative short and long term consequences for the mother and the baby. Therefore it is very important to make an adequate diagnostic in this population. Objective: The aim of this study was to determinate the prevalence of depression during pregnancy, in women attending for pre-natal care in Centro de Salud Bárbara, San Juan Sacatepéquez, Guatemala. Method: A total of 102 pregnant women were interviewed, using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Results: Prevalence of depression during pregnancy was 10.8%, being 5.9% episodes of mild depression and 4.9% of major depression episodes. Discussion: Analysis of several variables (age, socioeconomic level, civil status, schooling, child´s number, pregnancy trimester and history of previous abortions) by Pearsons Xi2 method, found that analyzed variables and depression are independent between each other, and have no relationship in this population.
