Resumen
Background: Alcohol consumption beverages is a worldwide habit, however, the level of consumption and their consequences varies between genders and between different demographic populations. Ten years ago, it was estimated that 47% of men consumed alcohol in moderate amounts, compared with 24% of women. Recently the gap in alcohol consumption between men and women has narrowed both in the amount of alcohol per day and in the excessive consumption of alcohol in a single episode. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the parameters of alcohol consumption among male and female students of the Universidad Francisco Marroquín, and to identify if there is a statistically significant relationship between them. Method: A sample of 150 men and 150 women were evaluated to determine the presence of alcohol use disorder, and a statistical analysis was carried out to evaluate similarity between both parameters. Results: There was a statistically significant similarity (t = 0.008849563) in the consumption of alcoholic beverages between men and women. Discussion: Moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages in men has not changed significantly during the last 10 years; with a previous data of 47% compared to a current consumption of 49%. However, the percentage of the female population that consumes moderate amounts of
alcoholic beverages has increased statistically since the result was 39% compared to 24% 10 years ago.
