Resumen
Osteoporosis is a disease with serious complications that can be preventable and many of its risk factors are modifiable. The WHO and the IOF report that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 8 men will suffer osteoporosis throughout their life. In Guatemala it is not recognized as a health problem. Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the knowledge of osteoporosis in young students from Francisco Marroquin University and compare this among medical students and students of other careers in the UFM. Method: This is a crosssectional study, in which the Osteoporosis Knowledge and Assessment Tool was used to interview 260 UFM students. Means comparison was used to compare osteoporosis knowledge among medical students and the knowledge of students from other faculties. Results: The average score of OKAT was 9.71 points. Medical students mean score was 12.2 points. The average score in faculties excluding medicine was 8 points. Conclusion: According to OKAT medical students have an appropriate knowledge about osteoporosis (score > 11 points). The average score of all students from other faculties indicates that they do not have a proper knowledge about osteoporosis. The mean score of the medical students is statistically higher than students from other faculties (p < 0.0001).
