Resumen
Introduction: The diagnosis of neonatal hypothyroidism is a condition considered urgent due to severe brain damage that induces the lack of thyroid hormones when they are not replaced. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the methodology and application of the screening program for the diagnosis of neonatal hypothyroidism and to determine its incidence in the San Juan de Dios General Hospital of Guatemala (HGSD). Methodology: Retrospective cohort study analyzing the TSH results of neonates born alive from January 1 to December 31, 2017, which were screened, using the HGSD laboratory database. The TSH cut-off value used was ≥ 20 μU/ml. The diagnosis was confirmed with a second TSH measurement, using the same cut-off value, starting replacement hormone treatment the same day. Results. The incidence of neonatal hypothyroidism was 1:3,707 newborns and the application of the screening program was 96.1% during the study period. Conclusions. The coverage of the program is good and comparable to that reported in other countries. The screening program must have its own staff, because only in this way, 100% coverage can be achieved and shorten the period of time to confirm the diagnosis and start treatment. Keywords: neonatal hypothyroidism, TSH, cut-off value
