Prevalence of burnout syndrome in college students

Introduction: Burnout syndrome is defined as emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and lack of personal fulfillment caused by the stress generated, either by work or study. Objectives: A study was conducted to determine the prevalence of burnout syndrome in the academic units of psychology, economic sciences, nutrition, architecture and dentistry of the Francisco Marroquín University. Methodology: the study was carried out evaluating the results given in the Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey for Students (MBI-GSS) applied to a total of 100 students from the units mentioned in November 2018. After the application of the inclusion criteria, 93 valid participants remained. Results: The prevalence of burnout syndrome was 5.37% of the population studied. Being 12% in dentistry, 0% in economic sciences, 10.5% of architecture, 0 % of Nutrition and, 5% of psychology. Discussion: When studying this population based on the type of academic area to which the school belongs, a prevalence was found in the area of health sciences of 5.5% and in areas not related to health sciences 5.26%. The results found are lower than those reported in other studies in students from faculties other than medicine, which report 20%. Keywords: Maslach, burnout.
