Resumen
Introduction: A responsible sex life is important for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. Worldwide, the use of contraceptive methods has increased, but it is unknown if everyone has sufficient knowledge on their use and if there is a relationship between the knowledge on them, and socioeconomic level and sexual practices. Objectives: To evaluate existing knowledge on contraceptive methods and their relation to socioeconomic levels and risky sexual behavior. Methodology: An observational and descriptive study of 76 surveys was conducted involving students between the ages of 18 and 25 enrolled in a high school in Guatemala City. Results: A statistically significant difference between the contraceptive method used in the participants’ first sexual encounters and their most recent sexual encounters was established. However, no statistically significant relationship was found between socioeconomic levels, and the knowledge of contraceptive methods and sexual behavior.
