Resumen
Introduction: The Surgical Apgar Score (SAS) is a simple and reliable assessment system that identifies patients who are at risk for perioperative complications. Objective: To determine the use of the Surgical Apgar Score (SAS) as a prognostic factor for major complications in the first 30 postoperative days. Methodology: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study of a case series developed with information from clinical records of 263 patients undergoing major surgery at the Herrera Llerandi Hospital in Guatemala City during the months of January to April 2018. Results: Using the Chi-square test it was verified that there is a relationship between the surgical Apgar score (SAS) and the presence of postoperative complications. Conclusion: The Surgical Apgar Score (SAS) is useful as a prognostic factor for postoperative complications.
