Resumen
Introduction: Congenital heart disease is the main cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in neonates; therefore, an early diagnosis is necessary to initiate adequate treatment. Objective: To evaluate the usefulness of pulse oximetry as a screening method for detection. Methodology: An observational prospective study was conducted in which pulse oximetry was used as a screening method for heart disease in 376 newborns. The American Heart Screening algorithm was strictly followed. Results: Echocardiograms were performed of which 90% diagnosed acyanotic congenital heart disease and 10% were normal. Discussion: We wanted to generate evidence about the early detection of congenital heart disease with the use of pulse oximetry in newborns and obtained results that favor its use. Indeed, in those who obtained a positive screening, the echocardiogram showed acynotic heart disease most of the time.
