Resumen
Introduction: Deceased donor organ transplantation is a medical practice that highly demands human resources as well as infrastructure and logistics that is carried out by highly specialized teams. In Guatemala, it began in 1996 when criteria that determine patients as candidates for donation were introduced into practice. Objective: To determine the knowledge about organ donation from deceased donors, in patients who were recipients, donors, potential recipients and potential donors. Methodology: Observational descriptive study in which a survey of organ donor and recipient patients was conducted. Results: Most of the patients surveyed had basic knowledge about organ donation with 65% indicating that they knew the concept of brain death. Conclusion: Organ donor and recipient patients have basic knowledge of deceased donor organ donation, but the treating physicians should improve patient education.
