Resumen
Introduction: Atopic dermatitis (AD) has been related to different immunologic diseases such as food allergies, asthma or rhinitis; this relationship is known as the “atopic march”. Objective: To determine the prevalence of asthma in pediatric patients, ages 0 to 12 years, with atopic dermatitis in the population of patients evaluated at the INDERMA outpatient clinic in zone 1 of Guatemala City during a period of 6 months. Methodology: This is an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study in which pediatric patients with a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis were included. Results: A sample of 316 patients with AD was obtained and a prevalence of asthma was determined to be 19%. It was determined that according to the severity classification of AD, 52% of patients presented with mild disease. Most asthmatic patients presented a moderate form of the disease (27%). AD is more common in infants from 0 to 4 years of age and becomes milder with older age. Conclusion: It was established that the prevalence of asthma in patients with AD at the Institute of Dermatology and Skin Surgery was 19%.
