Resumen
Introduction: In recent years, an increase in the diagnosis of congenital heart anomalies has been observed due to improvements in prenatal care and high-tech imagining methods. Guatemala has a high incidence of congenital heart disease but there are no studies that seek to determine the changes in quality of life that these patients experience after surgical repair. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the quality of life in pediatric patients diagnosed with ventricular septal defect (VSD) after surgical correction at UNICAR. Methodology: A record review was performed, and the Pediatrics Quality of life inventory 4.0 (PedsQL 4.0) survey was applied by telephone to selected patients. Results: Of the 30 files reviewed, 23 (77%) participated, 9 (39%) men and 14 (61%) women. The mean PedsQL survey results were 77.2 out of 100 in relation to quality of life, with an Inter-Quartile Range (IQR) of 63.1-83.0 and a standard deviation (SD) of 4.7. Conclusions: The quality of life of pediatric patients, after surgery at UNICAR in the years 2014-2017, who presented with a diagnosis of VSD was an average of 77.2 %. It was not possible to determine a significant difference between the results of the PedsQL survey between different sexes or by age range. The survival of the patients was 4.2 years.
