Resumen
Introduction: In medical practice, mental illnesses are perceived by health practitioners in a different way, hence our interest in knowing the attitude of medical students concerning it. Objective: To describe the perception and attitudes towards mental illness in medical students at the Francisco Marroquín University (UFM) in Guatemala. Methodology. An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted. The score obtained in the CAMI questionnaire was considered, where attitudes of authoritarianism, benevolence, social restriction and ideology towards the mental health community of the students towards patients suffering from mental illnesses were determined. The validated translation into Spanish of the "Community Attitudes towards Mental Illness" (CAMI) scale was used. Results: The sample was of 175 students and the response rate was 100%. The 99% have a benevolent attitude towards mental health illnesses, 80% demonstrated a low level of social restraint, and 56% a medium level of authoritarianism. Conclusion: A high percentage of benevolence was obtained, which reinforces the idea that there is a stigma towards patients with mental illness. In addition, a low percentage was obtained in favor of social restriction, which is suggestive that students do not believe that the participation of patients with mental illness should be limited.
