Resumen
Introduction: Helicobacter pylori is a highly prevalent bacterium in the Guatemalan population. It is known for causing a wide variety of gastrointestinal disease but has been related to systemic inflammatory conditions that could trigger pathophysiological processes in other organ systems such as the cardiovascular system. In this study we focus on the coexistence of the bacteria and acute coronary syndrome. Objective: To identify the presence of Helicobacter pylori infestation in patients who consulted a public hospital for diagnosis and management of acute coronary syndrome. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. A total of 50 patients admitted to the Cardiology Unit with a diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome were included, they were tested for Helicobacter pylori fecal antigen in feces. Results: Of all the patients with acute coronary syndrome, 68% were male; 52% suffer from arterial hypertension, and 50% have type 2 diabetes mellitus. 54% of patients with acute coronary syndrome were infected by H. pylori. Conclusion: The study showed an increased rate of infection by H. pylori in patients diagnosed with an ACS, however, it was not possible to determine an attributable increase in risk or causality.
