Resumen
Introduction: Diabetic nephropathy is a disease that increases morbidity, mortality, and health care costs. In addition, it is often present at the time of diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. A risk factor for its development is microalbuminuria. Objectives: To determine the incidence of diabetic nephropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus and their demographic characteristics. Methodology: Cross-sectional descriptive study in adult outpatients from the Hospital de Obras Sociales del Santo Hermano Pedro with diabetes mellitus, in whom microalbuminuria levels are quantified using reactive strips. Results: 90% of the patients diagnosed with diabetes presented microalbuminuria, which showed a direct correlation with age. The most frequent level of microalbuminuria was of 20 mg/L, and males presented higher levels of microalbuminuria. Conclusion: The prevalence of microalbuminuria in the sample of diabetic patients suggests that 90% of participants already have or are at risk of developing diabetic nephropathy.
